Much like any other region Europe consist of many
different countries, 47 to be exact. Europe is a large plain. A large part of
this plain (which is interrupted by minor mountain groups and hills) has fertile
agricultural soil; in the east and north there are vast steppe, forest, lake,
and tundra regions. South of the Alpine chain extend the Iberian, Italian, and
Balkan peninsulas, which are largely mountainous. Globally, Europe’s relative
location, at the heart of the land hemisphere is one for maximum efficiency for
contact with the rest of the world.
Almost nowhere in Europe is far from the sea and Europe interfaces with
the land as it does nowhere else on Earth.

North European plain- The fertile North European Plain slopes to
the north-northeast from the Alps, extending to the Baltic Sea, and on into
Denmark and southern Finland, Norway and Sweden. It continues east for almost
2,500 miles on into the Russian Federation. The land is largely flat with
smaller areas of hills, including the Central Russian Uplands. Farming is
prevalent and agricultural communities dot the
landscape.

Landforms:
Alps- Located in south-central Europe; they extend for almost 700
miles from the coastline of southern France into Switzerland, northern Italy and
Austria, then southeast through Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina as the
(Dinaric Alps). They end in Albania on the rugged coastline of the Adriatic Sea.
Known for stunning scenery, glaciers, lakes and valleys and the best skiing
conditions on the planet, they're the source of many rivers and tributaries
including the Danube, Po, Rhine and
Rhone.

European culture, religion, language & music
![Picture](/uploads/1/1/9/8/11983819/1338400174.png)
Religion in Europe has been a major influence on art, culture,
philosophy and law. The largest religion in Europe for at least a millennium and
a half has been Christianity. The vast majority of theists Europeans describe
themselves as Christians, divided into a large number of denominations.
Christian denominations are usually classed in three categories: Catholicism,
Orthodoxy and Protestantism. Roman Catholicism is the largest denomination with
adherents mostly existing in Latin Europe, Ireland, Lithuania, Poland, and many
other places.
While Europe is the birthplace of Western classical music, and
the home of one of the most developed pop-music markets in the world, the
continent also hosts a wealth of ethnic and folk traditions. In fact, all
European folk traditions are intensely regional, and even musical styles
emblematic of entire nations, such as France's bal musette or Portugal's fado
are always rooted in a specific locality. Often, there are stylistic variations
within regions, with each town and village putting its own peculiar spin on
music, as is often the case in Romania, where village musicians share a common
repertoire yet rarely play the same tune the same way as their colleagues in
the village down the road. Today, Europe is a bubbling cauldron of postcolonial
pop, traditional folkloric music and all kinds of fusions and cultural
crossovers.

Climate and vegetation
![Picture](/uploads/1/1/9/8/11983819/1338400203.png)
Europe’s mild and temperate climate falls under two classifications: Marine west coast and Mediterranean.
Due to its northerly location on the globe, Europe is presumed to have a harsh and cold climate. When in fact winters in Europe are less severe than those in New York and Boston.
Europe’s mild climate is due to two factors; prevailing westerly winds and the North Atlantic Drift Ocean current.
The prevailing westerly winds bring mild maritime air from the Atlantic therefor modifying Europe’s winters and summers. The winds also prevent bitterly cold artic air from penetrating into the continent; instead they sweep into Russia therefor, giving them bitterly cold winters.
Adding to the moderate climate, ocean temperatures are warmer than what would be expected at this location. This is due to the North Atlantic
Drift, a warm water ocean current. The current is an extension of the Gulf Stream that originates in the tropical Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico. The warm water of the North Atlantic Drift warms the air masses that invade Europe from the west and provides enough moisture and instability which provides beneficial precipitation for Europe.
The largest vegetation zone in Europe, cutting across the middle portion
of the continent from the Atlantic to the Urals, is a belt of mixed deciduous
and coniferous trees—oak, maple, and elm intermingled with pine and fir.

The European Union (EU) is a group of independent countries joined together to have
a single currency (the euro) and to combine their economic and military power.
The EU, by far, is the wealthiest and largest economy in the world, topping the
US by billions. In 2009 Europe remained the world’s wealthiest region. Its $32.7
trillion in assets represented more than one-third of the world’s wealth. The
EU is the first trade power in the world, trade within the union accounts for
more than one-third of the world’s total trade market.
Europe was the first continent to industrialize (industrialization led by the United Kingdom (UK)) as
a result it has become the richest continent in the world today. European economies account for half of the 10 wealthiest economies in the world.
Europe is home to the birth of democracy. All Western and Central European countries are democracies of various kinds.
For many purposes the European Union (EU) is governed by small groups of people nominated by the governments of the member states.
