Latin America is a region of the Americas where Romance languages
particularly Spanish and Portuguese, and variably French – are primarily spoken.
Spanish and Portuguese are the predominant languages of Latin America.
Portuguese is spoken only in Brazil, the biggest and most populous country in
the region. Spanish is the official language of most of the rest of the
countries on the Latin American mainland.
The vast majority of Latin Americans are Christians, mostly Roman
Catholics. About 70% of the Latin American population consider themselves
Catholic. Membership in Protestant denominations is increasing, particularly in
Brazil and Venezuela.
Latin American music comes in many varieties, from the simple, rural conjunto music of northern Mexico to the sophisticated habanera of Cuba, from the symphonies of Heitor Villa-Lobos to the simple and moving Andean flute. Music has played an important part in Latin America's turbulent recent history, for example the nueva canción movement. Latin music is very diverse, with the only truly unifying thread being the use of the Spanish
language or, in Brazil, its close cousin the Portuguese language.
Latin American culture is the formal or informal expression of the peoples of Latin America, and includes both high culture (literature, high art) and popular culture (music, folk art and dance) as well as religion and other customary practices.
